So this is the start of a trilogy, maybe? Welcome to the third part of this segment, of how to build your first WordPress website. We’ve covered the creation part already, so we’re going to cover the following topics: Updating WordPress, Blog Posts, and Managing Media.
WordPress, being the popular software that it is, is actually a really big target for hackers. Also, believe it or not, it’s just as susceptible to bugs as the next piece of software. So as you might imagine, updates are a part of life. A huge part. Themes, Plugins, and WordPress itself, all receive regular updates. Well, not necessarily themes and plugins, as that’s on the developer who wrote them. However, they should be updating it, so don’t assume it won’t happen.
The best place to look is the menu of the dashboard:
In this screenshot, we can see there are 4 Theme updates, 8 Plugins to be updated, and a core update, just by counting. 12 themes and plugins, so the 13th one is a core update. The more plugins and themes you have installed (not just active ones), means more updates you’ll have, thus increasing the frequency you’ll have to check for updates. So unless you want to give yourself constant work, resist the urge to install as many themes and plugins as you feel like without removing extras first. Let’s click Updates.
This is the Updates page. The first part of updates shows the core updates. Clicking the blue Update Now button will update your core installation. However, first you’ll want to run plugin updates first, so click “Select All” (unless there’s one you dont want to update, leave that one unchecked) and then click Update Plugins. You’ll then go to a screen of scrolling updates, with a notifier at the end telling you it’s complete.
It’s worth noting that for every WordPress site you have, you have to manage this. This means that if you multiple blogs, that maintenance time is just going to pile up if you do the updates manually. I highly recommend WPRemote for easy management of multiple sites.
Originally just a blogging platform, WordPress is extremely proficient in being a blog. It’s safe to assume its blogging management is great and easy to use. To start blogging, you just go to Posts in the menu, and then click Add New on the next page.
Then you are taken to a lovely editing page, where you can fill it with your soul. Or whatever words you feel like sharing. This is what a blogger calls home:
A short explanation of what might not be immediately obvious…. it has the option to save drafts and preview. It is very good to make it your practice to do that until you are ready to publish. Don’t publish and change thinking no one’s going to notice. That is an awful habit to get into and it will cause problems.
If it’s an image or a file of any kind, it’s managed in the Media Library. This is located under Media:
Once you’re in, you’ll see the Library in all its glory.
There’s not a lot here that isn’t self explanatory. What’s worth mentioning, is that you can upload, browse, delete, and even crop and resize photos here.
It’s really important for your site’s SEO that you take the time to set your tags for each image when you add them. These can be found by clicking the image in the image library.
